Successful Initiatives
A multi-year decarbonization action plan
Tony has extensive experience developing evidence-based decarbonization plans for commercial and institutional buildings. Under his guidance, he oversaw detailed energy assessments for 150 buildings and renewable energy feasibility studies for over 80 buildings across the Yukon. With the findings from these assessments, further supported by energy trend consumptions and business case evaluations, Tony proposed a detailed 10-year actionable strategy that would successfully reach his client’s ambitious target of 30% below 2010 levels by 2030.

This ambitious decarbonization plan took into consideration not just the technical aspects of the projects, but also the downstream operational impacts of proposed initiatives. Each project in the strategy involved an in-depth interview with building operators as well as a technical review of the applicable equipment. This combination of qualitative and quantitative data is used to evaluate, select, and prioritize recommendations; each building energy retrofit must be financially attractive, improve building operations, and reduce carbon emissions. Acknowledging building operators’ feedback into building retrofit measures encourages them to be more energy aware in their day-to-day operations. This also ensures that our energy recommendations are tailored for improving the relationship between the building, its users, and the client’s commitment to the environment.
This extensive upfront work resulted in the collective buy-in of everyone involved, optimized the value of each project, improved the likelihood of securing funding, and greatly enhanced the chance of long-term success.
ISO 50001 Energy Management System
Tony developed and launched the energy management system for Government of Yukon facilities to track and reduce energy consumption in 2017. Taking a people-first approach, he worked closely with building operators and senior leadership to identify projects that addressed their respective needs in an energy efficient way.

Since then, Tony has continued to grow and refine this system to meet the department’s growing needs for extensive planning and reporting. Today, this energy management system is the best in the Yukon and one of the best in Canada. In early 2024, Government of Yukon successfully achieved ISO50001 Ready Canada recognition by Natural Resources Canada, demonstrating compliance with a high degree of performance as per international quality standards. Government of Yukon is the first government jurisdiction across Canada and the largest organization with over 280 buildings to have achieved this. Read more about it here.
Shared Values:
Five pillars
As part of their work to assist clients in moving sustainable initiatives forward, Tony developed a 5-pillar framework to strengthen business cases for climate change initiatives for their client. Through the Yukon Green Infrastructure Program (YGIP), this framework gently reminded decision makers about their social and environmental responsibilities and that the value of a project is not just the financial impact.
The framework reflects values of sustainability (GHG reduction and climate resilience), fiscal responsibility, operational improvements, local economic benefits, and demonstrating climate leadership. Adoption of this framework encouraged everyone to actively participate in sustainability initiatives as it resulted in decisions that aligned with their own values.
